Connect Codex
Add DeskWink to Codex (CLI, app or IDE extension) as a remote MCP server with one command or a config file, and sign in on DeskWink's page.
These steps follow OpenAI’s Codex documentation on MCP servers (learn.chatgpt.com, read on 31 October 2026). DeskWink has not yet run them in Codex ourselves. Menus and commands change; if something differs, check OpenAI’s page and tell us at [email protected]. DeskWink is independent and is not made or endorsed by OpenAI.
What you need
- Codex installed on a computer with a browser, so you can sign in to DeskWink.
- DeskWink running on the computer whose folders you want to use (it can be the same computer), with a folder shared. Run
deskwink statusto check. See Getting started.
Codex in a terminal, the Codex app and the IDE extension share one configuration, so you add DeskWink once. ChatGPT on the web does not read your local Codex configuration; to use DeskWink there, follow Connect ChatGPT.
Codex CLI
-
Add DeskWink as a remote server:
codex mcp add deskwink --url https://mcp.deskwink.com/mcp -
Sign in:
Codex opens DeskWink’s page in your browser. Sign in with the account you used to pair your computer, choose the computers and abilities on the consent page, and click Allow.
codex mcp login deskwink - Start
codexand type/mcpto see the active servers.codex mcp listlists what is configured. - Ask something that needs your files, such as “Which computers do I have connected to DeskWink?”
OpenAI documents --oauth-client-id and --oauth-client-secret for servers that require a pre-registered OAuth client. DeskWink does not: leave them out.
Codex app and IDE extension
- App. OpenAI’s page describes the desktop app as the “ChatGPT desktop app”: open Settings → MCP servers → Add server, enter the name
DeskWink, choose Streamable HTTP, enter the address below, save, and select Restart. - IDE extension. Open the gear menu, choose MCP servers → Add server, enter the same details, save, and select Restart extension.
- Then select Authenticate next to DeskWink in the server list and sign in on DeskWink’s page. Type
/mcpin the composer to see connected servers.
https://mcp.deskwink.com/mcp Config file
You can also add a table to ~/.codex/config.toml (or .codex/config.toml in a trusted project, for a server that applies only there):
[mcp_servers.deskwink]
url = "https://mcp.deskwink.com/mcp" Then run codex mcp login deskwink as above. Do not add bearer_token_env_var: DeskWink uses OAuth, not a fixed token.
If it does not work
- Codex says the computer is offline. DeskWink only runs while you have started it. Run
deskwink launchon the computer whose folders you want to use. - The sign-in did not start, or it expired. Run
codex mcp login deskwinkagain, or select Authenticate in the app or extension. Sign-in opens a browser, so it needs a computer with one. - Codex cannot see a folder. Add it with
deskwink folders add, and check on the consent page that this computer is allowed. You can change it in the console under AI connections. - You changed the configuration and nothing changed. Restart Codex, or use Restart in the app or Restart extension in the IDE.
- Codex asks before it uses a tool. That is Codex’s own approval setting. DeskWink separately holds every file change for your approval in the console.
