Connect VS Code

Add DeskWink to Visual Studio Code as a remote MCP server with the MCP: Add Server command, sign in on DeskWink's page, and choose which folders on your computer it may use.

From the VS Code documentation, not tested by DeskWink yet

These steps follow the VS Code documentation on MCP servers (code.visualstudio.com, read on 31 October 2026). DeskWink has not yet run them in VS Code ourselves, and VS Code’s pages do not say whether it signs in with dynamic client registration, so that step is marked below. If something differs, tell us at [email protected]. DeskWink is independent and is not made or endorsed by Microsoft.

What you need

  • A recent VS Code with AI features enabled and a project folder open. Your organisation can restrict which MCP servers are allowed; if so, ask your administrator.
  • DeskWink running on the computer whose folders you want to use, with a folder shared. Run deskwink status to check. See Getting started.

Steps

  1. Open the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows and Linux, Shift+Cmd+P on a Mac) and run MCP: Add Server.
  2. Choose HTTP (HTTP or Server-Sent Events) and enter https://mcp.deskwink.com/mcp as the server URL.
  3. Enter deskwink as the server ID.
  4. Choose where to save it. VS Code offers a global option and the workspace (.vscode/mcp.json). In a workspace file the entry looks like this:
    {
      "servers": {
        "deskwink": {
          "type": "http",
          "url": "https://mcp.deskwink.com/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
    Do not add an oauth block or a client secret: DeskWink has no fixed client ID to give.
  5. Review VS Code’s trust prompt and start the server. VS Code’s page says starting can require trust or authentication. A browser window should open for sign-in; we could not verify that VS Code registers itself with DeskWink automatically. Sign in to DeskWink with the account you used to pair your computer, choose the computers and abilities on the consent page, and click Allow.
  6. Check it works, as VS Code suggests: send a prompt that names the server and a low-impact action, such as “Use DeskWink to list which computers I have connected”, and confirm that a DeskWink tool ran and returned a result.

If it does not work

  • The computer is offline. DeskWink only runs while you have started it. Run deskwink launch on the computer whose folders you want to use.
  • The server does not start. Run MCP: List Servers, choose DeskWink and use Start Server or Restart Server. In a workspace that is in Restricted Mode, workspace servers cannot start until you trust the workspace.
  • VS Code says it cannot register a client or asks for a client ID. DeskWink does not hand out fixed client IDs. Tell us at [email protected] which VS Code version you use.
  • VS Code cannot see a folder. Add it with deskwink folders add, and check on the consent page that this computer is allowed. You can change it in the console under AI connections.
